Cultural Advice under ACC SCS

How Nicola can help.

I meet kanohi ki te kanohi (face to face) with takata whaiora (client) and develop a flexible, safe and holistic plan that is unique to each person utilising Cultural Advice hours under ACC ISSC. These plans are lead by takata whaiora’s kōreo (discussion) identifying connection to Te Ao Māori. We can be connecting within the whenua, community groups, within their specific whakapapa, learning who they are as Māori and what this means for them in their everyday life.

I aim to awhi (support) individuals in understanding their identity and healing from trauma by acknowledging their own tikanga (customs) and Māori worldview unique to each person, in recognition of their Tūpuna (ancestors). The concept of self-determination, or tino rangatiratanga, provides safety and well-being for each individual and their whānau.

My work includes introducing and supporting people onto the marae, working within the environment, karakia, waiata, kapa haka, weaving, whakairo, whakapapa exploration, reconnecting to whānau, understanding Te Reo Māori, referrals and awhi into services within our community. This is done gently and at the pace of each individual takata whaiora. I can provide transport for our takata whaiora, provide home visits or meet people in our whenua, taking a walk or sitting in the ngahere (forest). I also work with pākehā and other cultures who have a connection into the Māori whakapapa within their family, this could be having children, stepchildren, partners and extended whānau and community who are Māori.

I can provide support to Lead Providers by developing their understanding and confidence to work with Māori whānau. This can be provided in person or via phone/zoom.

If you are interested in accessing this support as a client please speak with your lead provider.
